Old Dominion Could Preserve Farmland
Wire service reports say another state may be moving toward state-funded farmland preservation, a program in which restrictions are placed on land-use in order to preserve agriculture and open space, and to forestall residential development on farmland. Virginia's agriculture secretary Robert Bloxom told a farm convention recently he wants the state to commit to farmland preservation by supporting programs that will make sure farmland stays farmland.
States like New Jersey already have these state-funded programs in place. Some locally-funded and authorized programs exist in Virginia already, but nothing like those exist at the state level. Typically, the government agency in charge of the program pays land owners for the development rights, and they give up those development rights in return for the payments. Private-public partnerships aimed at preserving farmland exist in most states, but exclusively state-funded programs do not exist in every state. For more information see the Land Trust Alliance.
Where There's Smoke...
Concerned about energy use and costs? So's everybody else, including farmers and the U.S. government. Next month's conclave in St. Louis, MO should prove interesting as hosts Farm Foundation and the U.S. Department of Agriculture hold their conference: Energy from Agriculture: New Technologies, Innovative Programs and Success Stories.
Economic research findings and first-hand energy-production experience will be featured during the presentations. Specific attention will be given to ethanol— its production, byproducts and market impacts—and to energy production from non-traditional feedstocks, according to Drovers Magazine. Also featured: reports by farmers and ranchers on their first-hand experiences in energy production in such areas as anaerobic digesters, biomass, wind, solar, ethanol and biodiesel.

If you're buying or selling land in portions of Colorado, Utah or Wyoming, pay attention: a reserve estimated at nearly 1 trillion barrels of oil buried deep in rock formations stretching from western Colorado into northeasternUtah and southwestern Wyoming may be a way to ease U.S. dependence on shrinking foreign oil supplies. U.S. legislation is opening up more research in this area, and Shell is exploring ways of extracting greater amounts of oil from shale than in previous oil shale exploration cycles.
