Residential land consists of that portion of land occupied by
single-family housing, multi-family housing, stand-alone homes on large
acreage plots and areas where a combination of these housing types
exist. Residential land also includes land zoned for residential uses,
whether or not it has been developed and built-out, or not.

In the U.S., there are nearly 70 million single-family residences,
with another 7 million, roughly, attached single-family residences.
Another 24 million or so units are of housing are in multi-family
structures, ranging from two to more than 50 units per building.
In the U.S., 68 percent of all housing is owner-occupied. There are
a little over 100 million separate households in the U.S., according to
the 2001 American Housing Survey, sponsored by the federal Department
of Housing and Urban Development.
As well, there are nearly 5 million condominium units in the U.S.,
and a little over a half-million cooperative units of housing. Nearly
7.3 million mobile or manufactured homes also occupy residential land
in the U.S., the housing census notes.
