Oil And Minerals
Oil was first discovered in the U.S. in the early 19th century in Pennsylvania, near what is now Oil City, PA. Since then, oil has been found mostly in the southwestern U.S.-in Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana and to a lesser extent in the far Southwest: California, Arizona and New Mexico. Offshore finds in both the Pacific Ocean along the Southern California coast and in the Gulf of Mexico have been extensive. Oil deposits are also plentiful in Alaska.
Mineral finds are scattered throughout the U.S., with copper found mostly in the intermountain West, and zinc, nickel, iron ore and coal scattered throughout the U.S., but mostly in the northern half of the U.S. Precious metals like gold and silver are almost exclusively found in the western half of the U.S., if at all-most deposits were long ago worked through.
Oil and natural gas have been found on both private and public lands-the federal government controls the leasing of public lands for energy exploration and mining or drilling, with lease sale revenue being returned, in part, to the states where the leases exist.
As it usually the case with resource development in the U.S., the question of which lands and water acreage to lease for oil and mineral exploration has often been contentious because of concerns about environmental damage inflicted when drilling, mining or transport of energy takes place. In the Appalachian region, aggressive mining styles and water storage have often come under attack.
